Plantation of High Yield Variety
of Sugarcane
Generally, the percentage of high yield sugarcane variety is very low
as high yield sugarcane varieties demand balanced doses of fertilizer
and irrigation etc. Besides, high yielding sugarcane is more susceptible
to pests and diseases. Therefore, the growers are generally reluctant to
adopt plantation of high yield sugarcane varieties. To motivate the cane
growers, various incentives are provided by the factory. With the
concerted efforts of the factory to develop sugarcane in the area, early
and mid maturing varieties are being sufficiently supplied to the
factory and cane growers are now preferring to go for high yield
varieties. The factory has already introduced CoS-8436 and CoS-88230
sugarcane variety in the first phase on commercial scale.
Seed Distribution
Quality seed in crop husbandry is of prime importance, especially in
case of sugarcane. Development of good nursery farm will have direct
impact on productivity of sugarcane and also on recovery of sugar.
Replacement of old seed by improved and healthy seed will increase the
yield of sugarcane. It will directly benefit the cane growers and
factory.
The factory has adopted three-tier seed nursery programme for supply of
improved seed to cane growers for plantation. The plantation is done as
first step seed nursery under different promising varieties. The produce
from first step nurseries is being made available to sugarcane growers
through sugar mill. The sugarcane seed produced and raised
scientifically on the lands of cultivator is also supplied and
distributed to other growers as a third step nursery. In this way
factory is able to make available good quality cane seed every year.
