Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd., Khatauli has its area of operation in the District of Muzaffarnagar and some parts of Meerut and Bagpat. The soil and climate in the command area of factory is most suitable for the cultivation of sugarcane. Sugarcane is a major raw material available for manufacturing of sugar. The reserved area of the sugar factory comprises of an aggregate cultivable area of 72000 Ha. Major operational area of the factory fall within a radius of 16 km. Most of the land in the area of .is suitable for cane cultivation. The average yield of the cane is about 55 MT/ha, Which is lower as compared to the National level of cane yield. It can be improved through better cultivation practices. In order to augment the production a sugarcane and to increase the yield per hectare further, the factory has undertaken a comprehensive cane development

Major crops in the area are Sugarcane, Paddy, Wheat etc. Farmers are more inclined to grow sugarcane due to assured cane price and assistance extended by the factory. In the area of operation of the factory, the soil is predominantly Sandy Loam and Loamy. In most areas of cultivation the soils are well drained and suitable for cane cultivation. Sugarcane cultivation is carried out under varied climate and soil conditions in India. Geographically, the cultivation of sugarcane is carried out under two distinct belt based on agro-climatic conditions, namely, the tropical belt and sub-tropical belt. The entire area of operation of the factory falls in the sub-tropical zone of the country. The annual rainfall of the place is 600 mm to 1000 mm during normal monsoon year. Out of total rainfall, 75 % received during the monsoon and rest 25% is received in winter, usually in the month of late December and January.

The temperature in this zone remains extreme i.e. in the hot summer months it reaches as high as 42-43 deg. cent. while in the winter season, it goes down to as low as 2- 4 deg. cent. in the month of January. The soil texture is sandy loam to loamy sand. The pH ranging from 7.2 to 7.8 which may be termed as moderately alkaline and is very favorable for the cultivation of sugarcane. This type of climate is mainly responsible for quick growth of sugarcane. The average humidity remains in the range of 50-70% .

Sugarcane crop requires regular and adequately spaced irrigation facilities therefore, good irrigation facilities are very critical for proper cultivation of sugarcane. Whole area under sugarcane cultivation is mostly under protective irrigation under canals, tube-wells, pumping sets and lift irrigation.

There are about 41000 private tube wells and borings with pumping sets which covers 100% area of sugarcane under irrigation. 118 km long canal is also available in the area of operation of the factory for irrigation purposes, in addition to the private tube wells.

The existing irrigation facility in the area of operation is adequate for production of required sugarcane per year. It is also observed that, sugar factory has been receiving all its cane requirement every season and no major shortage of cane has been reported. Average

sugarcane yield in the area of operation varies from 50 to 55 ton per hectare and is much below than the average yield on the national level, which has been in the range of 65 to 70 ton per hectare. It is felt that through adoption of improved cane development techniques it should be possible to achieve a higher cane yield in the area of operation.
