Overview

Overview
Triveni's sugar factory at Khatauli began operations in 1933 with a crushing capacity of 500 TCD. Khatauli sugar unit is located in Distt. Muzzaffarnagar, one of the largest cane growing districts of U.P. The crushing capacity of Khatauli was gradually increased in phases from initial 500 TCD to its present 16,000 TCD capacity in various phases.

The consistent performance of the factory has been due to the deployment of modern equipment designed in collaboration of Sugar Research International of Australia, like Continuous Vacuum Pan for energy (steam & power) efficiency & syrup clarification systems for sugar quality, which has allowed the unit to achieve better operational parameters. The technical efficiencies achieved by the plant are amongst the best in the state.

The branded sugar of Triveni “Shagun” is packaged in a state-of-the-art sugar packaging section located in the sugar factory premises. The sugar packaging section is considered to be the best designed sugar packaging sections amongst all the players in branded sugar business in India.

The factory has about 36159 hectare cane area and deals with approx. 47,668 farmers to meet its requirement of sugar cane. Apart from the cane purchased at the factory gate, cane is also procured from 161 cane purchase out-centres.

The Khatauli plant has been a pioneer in the usage of IT for the cane procurement as well as for the cane development. The details about the land holdings, area under cane, last few years supply to the factory etc are used for the cane procurement and cane development. Farmers are advised on sowing of the cane varieties based on details collected by the factory laboratory on land type, soil details etc.

Technology-
In the year 1947-48, the sugar production process was converted to Double Carbonation Double Sulphitation with the objective of improving the quality of the product. This process continued till 1990-1991 season. Due to environmental considerations, fast depletion of limestone resources in the Doon valley and unavoidable generation of liquid effluent, the process was again changed to Double Sulphitation in 1991.

Khatauli sugar unit lays emphasis on the adoption of latest technologies and has its own R&D for continuous upgradation of operational efficiency, thus improving product quality and cane yields.

Some of the recent additions in plant & machinery include
  • New milling tandem with 4 mills with individual DC drive installed
  • In Co-generation 2 high pressure boilers 87 ata and high pressure power turbine have been installed
  • Rotary screens
  • Continuous vacuum pans for B & C-massecuite boiling
  • Syrup clarification system
  • Short Retention Clarification of SRI, Australia
  • High capacity DC motor driven centrifugals
  • Plate heat exchangers
  • Cooling tower cell
  • Automation of mills, boilers, continuous vacuum pans & clarification sysytem based on Distributed Control System of Tata Honeywell and steam flow meters
In boiling house new equipments have been installed to improve the process efficiency, sugar quality and reduce steam consumption
  • Short retention clarifier of SRI
  • Juice Heater of higher heating surface
  • DEVC & Quad bodies
  • Continuous vacuum pans of Triveni SRI
  • High capacity batch type & continuous type centrifugal machines
  • I.C. Grader for better grading
  • Complete system of heat recovery including contact heater CIGAR (flash recovery), melter and conditioner
Advantages –
Strategic location of mill
Khatauli sugar unit is located in Western U.P., an area with the largest concentration of cane cultivation, highly fertile and well irrigated land.

Proximity to high sugar demand markets
Khatauli sugar mill is located close to the high sugar demand states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal. Thus, our primary markets are located close to our manufacturing facilities and we do not rely on transporting our sugar to distant markets, which gives us a comparative advantage in distribution costs of this bulk commodity. L grain sugar of Khatauli unit attracts a premium in the market.

Excellent relationships with farmers
Khatauli being one of the oldest sugar mills in western U.P., has developed very strong relationship with the farmers for generations. We make timely payments to sugarcane farmers and have built excellent relationships and goodwill with them, which is an important factor in our industry. We have a good record of payments to farmers for sugarcane despite the cyclical nature of the sugar industry and have strong ties with approximately 47,668 sugarcane farmers.

Extensive network for sugarcane collection
In order to facilitate the sale of sugarcane to us by the sugarcane farmers, apart from collection of sugarcane at factory gate, we have established an extensive network of collection centres in and around Khatauli, where the sugarcane is collected by us and payments are made to farmers.

Good product quality
The sugar produced by Khatauli sugar mill is bold grained and is rated as one of the better qualities of sugar produced in western Uttar Pradesh. This enables us to command a premium on the sugar produced by us. The Khatauli sugar unit also pioneered the production of bold grain (L) sugar in India.
